COURSE CURRICULUM
The History and Politics program progresses through three structured years, each building on the last to develop a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of historical and political processes. In Year 1, students engage with foundational modules that introduce essential academic skills and core concepts in both disciplines. They explore how history is constructed through "Introducing History: Ideas and Practice" and examine Britain’s imperial legacy in "Empireland? Britain at Home and Abroad." Parallel modules in political science introduce key political ideologies, institutions, and global relations, providing a broad base in political theory and international affairs. Year 2 allows students to specialise further, combining academic depth with professional skill development. Core modules such as "History in Practice" focus on research and reflective learning, while others like "Liberalism: Freedom and Toleration" and "Approaches to Development" delve into political theory and global socio-economic issues. Students also choose from a wide range of thematic history modules covering topics from the Second World War and genocide to London’s early modern past and colonial protest, along with politically-focused options like "Applied Politics and International Relations." This flexible structure enables students to tailor their studies to their interests and career aspirations. In Year 3, students consolidate their learning through advanced study. Compulsory modules in international relations and political conspiracy develop critical analysis and research skills, while students choose between completing a dissertation or undertaking a work placement to apply their academic knowledge in a focused or practical context. Further specialisation is offered through 15-credit options in areas such as Ottoman urban life, gender and defiance in modern Britain and North America, environmental history, slavery, film and propaganda, and food politics. By the end of the program, students graduate with a strong grasp of global and historical dynamics, equipped for careers in fields like education, heritage, policy, journalism, or postgraduate study.
