COURSE CURRICULUM
In Year 3, students must complete one compulsory module, two modules from a selection of literary and cultural options, and one optional module from a broad range of creative, professional, or language-based choices, making up a total of 120 credits. The core module, Literature and Publishing Since 1820 (30 credits), develops students’ understanding of the historical and contemporary publishing industries, exploring how cultural industries shape audiences and marketing strategies, while also strengthening their analytical, written, and oral communication skills. From the 60-credit list of literature-based options, students can choose from a variety of modules, each worth 30 credits. These include The Literature of the Gothic, which focuses on key Gothic texts and their cultural and historical contexts; English in World Literatures, which examines postcolonial and transnational writing; Contemporary Writing and Critical Theory, which blends modern literature with theoretical approaches; Modern Identities: Literature of the Global Eighteenth Century, which links the literature of empire with modern identity concepts; and British Theatre since 1995, which explores contemporary British drama and sociopolitical themes. For the final 30 credits, students may choose from practical and creative modules such as Novel Writing, Dissertation, Journalism in Practice, Contemporary Publishing, or Work Placement, which allow for applied learning, professional development, or independent research. Alternatively, students can opt for language modules in Mandarin, French, Italian, or Spanish at various proficiency levels, or pursue a Language Research Project for advanced linguistic and cultural exploration. Many of these options promote transferable skills, creative expression, and engagement with global or professional contexts. This structure allows students to tailor their final year to their academic strengths, creative interests, or career goals, while building on the knowledge and skills developed in earlier stages of the program. Module selections must ensure no duplication across credit categories.
