COURSE CURRICULUM
The drama degree provides a comprehensive and progressively specialised journey over four years, blending practical training, critical theory, and industry engagement. In Year 1, students build foundational skills through core modules. Production and Technical Theatre focuses on backstage roles and project management, while Critical Contexts for Performance explores the historical, cultural, and theoretical foundations of theatre. Improvisation and Devising introduces students to practical methods of creating performance, and Documentary Theatre examines ethical and political implications of dramatizing real events. Acting the Contemporary Text and Acting for Screens develop performance techniques across stage and screen, emphasising critical analysis, personal methodology, and adaptability. Year 2 allows students to select between two option sets. Both include compulsory Stage Production, which culminates in a staff-directed performance. In Option Set 1, students can choose the International Study pathway, gaining 60 credits through immersive learning abroad. Option Set 2 provides greater flexibility through 15- and 30-credit modules like Writers Room, Performance Laboratory, Immersive Performance, Placement Project, and Physical Theatre, allowing tailored development in writing, physical performance, or professional engagement. In Year 3, students complete an Advanced Production Project and choose from Research Project, Creative Entrepreneurship, or Directing and Acting for Industry, promoting independent practice or career-focused learning. Additional options include Advanced Screenwriting, Multi-media Filmmaking, and British Theatre since 2005, which cater to both academic and vocational interests. Year 4 focuses on deepening specialisation through a core Research Project and a set of creative options. Students can explore Directing, Youth Theatre, Performing Technologies, Solo Performance, or Theatre Company work. Final optional modules offer advanced skills in Acting, Placement, or British Theatre. Across the program, students are encouraged to critically reflect, collaborate, and apply their learning in diverse professional and cultural contexts, preparing them for a range of creative industry roles or further academic study.
