COURSE CURRICULUM
The English Literature and Creative Writing course is structured over three years to develop students’ creative, analytical, and professional skills. In Year 1, students take three compulsory modules—Writing for Stage and Screen, Writing Poetry and Prose, and Writing for the Media—which introduce scriptwriting, contemporary literary styles, and media writing across genres such as journalism and digital content. These modules build foundational skills in creative expression, critical thinking, and stylistic versatility. Alongside these, students choose one optional module, selecting either from literary theory, linguistics, or a foreign language such as Mandarin, French, Italian, or Spanish, allowing them to explore their interests and broaden their global or analytical perspectives. In Year 2, students take 90 credits from writing-focused modules, including Advanced Poetry Writing, Short Story Writing, Intermediate Writing for Stage and Screen, and Writing Journalism. These modules help refine technique and expand students’ understanding of diverse forms, voices, and media, while fostering professional development in both creative and journalistic contexts. For the remaining 30 credits, students can choose either a foreign language or contextual modules such as International Bestsellers or Poetry and Drama in Context, or a Language Research Project, deepening literary, cultural, or linguistic expertise. In the final year, students complete a compulsory Creative Project (LLT), a major independent work in their chosen genre, accompanied by critical reflection and theoretical engagement. They also select 30 credits from options like Novel Writing, language modules, World Literatures, or Publishing courses. A further 60 credits are chosen from a focused group of creative practice modules, including Novel Writing, Advanced Writing for Stage and Screen, Journalism in Practice, and Contemporary Publishing. This structure supports specialisation while offering flexibility, enabling students to align their studies with personal interests and career goals, whether in fiction, performance writing, journalism, language, or publishing, and prepares them for work in creative industries or further academic study.
