COURSE CURRICULUM

This architecture degree is structured to develop students into thoughtful, skilled designers with strong conceptual, technical, and contextual understanding of the built environment. The first year introduces core architectural design principles and processes through modules like Architectural Design 1: Investigation and Proposition and Experimentation and Communication. Students engage in drawing, model-making, and site analysis to develop creative design responses. Supporting modules such as Cultural Contexts of Architecture, Architectural Design Technology, and History of Architecture and Landscape provide foundational knowledge of architectural theory, environmental considerations, and historical perspectives.In the second year, students begin to explore more complex design problems in Architectural Design 2: Exploration and Proposition, integrating a deeper understanding of materials, construction techniques, and cultural contexts. Modules like Architecture Technology 2 and Introducing Architecture & Landscape Practice 2 help students situate their design work within professional and environmental frameworks. Contemporary Theories of Architecture introduces key texts and thinkers, preparing students for critical engagement with architectural ideas and their dissertation in the final year.The final year focuses on advanced design and independent research. Students undertake a major design project across two modules—Architectural Design 3: Exploration and Proposition and Resolution—requiring them to synthesize their learning into a coherent, contextually responsive proposal. Architectural Design Technology 3 deepens technical knowledge, addressing sustainability, regulations, and the realities of construction and professional practice. The Architecture Dissertation allows students to research a self-defined topic, drawing connections between theory, history, technology, and design.Throughout the degree, emphasis is placed on critical thinking, experimentation, and the ability to communicate complex ideas visually, verbally, and in writing—preparing graduates for professional roles in architecture and further academic or design study.
