COURSE CURRICULUM

The two-year fast-track Speech and Language Therapy program is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience necessary to become registered practitioners. In the first year, students focus on paediatric practice, developing core competencies across four modules that address the assessment, intervention, and management of communication and swallowing difficulties in children. This is complemented by modules on using evidence in health care practice and interprofessional collaboration and development, which enhance students’ ability to apply research to clinical decision-making and work effectively within multi-professional teams. The Speech and Language Therapy Foundation Studies module provides essential preparatory knowledge for clinical practice. In the second year, the focus shifts to adult practice through four modules covering assessment and intervention across a range of adult communication and swallowing disorders. Students also undertake a Research Activity module, enabling them to design, conduct, and critically evaluate empirical research, reinforcing the integration of evidence-based practice into clinical decision-making. Foundation Studies 2 provides additional knowledge in pathology relevant to adult therapy. The program combines theoretical learning, practical skills development, and supervised clinical placements, ensuring that graduates are prepared for professional practice with a strong understanding of both paediatric and adult speech and language therapy. Overall, it fosters clinical competence, critical thinking, and interprofessional collaboration in diverse healthcare settings.
