COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Survey Methods for Social Research provides a structured and comprehensive approach to designing, conducting, and analysing surveys, equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for careers in social, academic, and market research. At the core of the program is the Postgraduate Taught Project and Academic Skills module, worth 60 credits, which develops essential skills in independent research, critical thinking, and academic writing. Core modules such as Introduction to Survey Design and Management, Survey Sampling, Non-Response and Inference, and Survey Measurement and Question Design, each contributing 20 credits, provide students with a deep understanding of how to plan and execute surveys, select appropriate sampling methods, manage non-response, and design effective questionnaires. Compulsory modules, including Introduction to Quantitative Analysis, Modelling Policing, Crime and Society, and the Survey Practicum, equip students with practical experience in analysing data, applying statistical techniques, and managing real-world survey projects. The Survey Practicum, in particular, allows students to gain hands-on experience in professional research environments, integrating theoretical concepts with practical application. Overall, the program develops the expertise needed to conduct high-quality survey research, interpret findings critically, and contribute effectively to research projects in academic, professional, and policy contexts.
