COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Social Data Science at Essex is structured to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in social data analysis, combining rigorous technical training with applied social science knowledge. The program begins with core modules that introduce students to essential skills in programming and data analysis, including an Introduction to Programming in Python and Data Science and Decision Making, ensuring that students are equipped to work with complex datasets and computational methods. Students also engage with Research Design, which provides a strong grounding in the principles and practices of social science research, preparing them to approach questions methodically and rigorously. Core modules offer flexibility through options such as GV993-7-PS or GV985-7-PS, allowing students to tailor the curriculum to their interests and career goals. A significant portion of the program is dedicated to optional modules, giving students the freedom to explore specialised areas, deepen technical expertise, or focus on applied aspects of social data science. The degree culminates in a dissertation, supported by Dissertation Preparation, in which students apply the skills and knowledge gained to a substantial research project, integrating data science techniques with social science inquiry. This combination of technical training, research skills, and applied learning prepares graduates for careers in public policy, research, data analysis, consultancy, and other roles requiring expertise in social data and evidence-based decision-making.
