COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Quantitative Political Science at Essex is structured to provide students with comprehensive training in the application of quantitative methods to the study of politics. The program begins with a core module that lays the foundation for understanding political phenomena using rigorous empirical approaches. Students develop skills in both basic and advanced quantitative techniques, covering essential methods for analysing political data and evaluating theoretical models. In addition to core quantitative modules, the course includes a compulsory module that introduces students to substantive political science topics, allowing them to contextualize their methodological training within practical political questions. A further core module combines advanced quantitative methods with optional selections, enabling students to tailor their learning to specific areas of interest and deepen their expertise. Students can also choose from a range of optional modules offered by the Department of Government, providing opportunities to explore specialized topics such as comparative politics, political economy, or public opinion, and to apply quantitative skills in diverse contexts. Through this combination of methodological training, applied study, and independent research, the program prepares graduates for careers in research, policy analysis, consultancy, and academic study, equipping them with the expertise to use data-driven approaches to understand and address complex political challenges.
