COURSE CURRICULUM

The policing-focused MSc provides an in-depth examination of contemporary challenges in law enforcement, equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills to understand and evaluate policing in society. At the core of the program is the Postgraduate Taught Project and Academic Skills module, worth 60 credits, which develops essential skills in independent research, critical thinking, and academic writing. Core modules such as Contemporary Policing and Introduction to Quantitative Analysis, each contributing 20 credits, provide students with a strong foundation in understanding policing practices, policy frameworks, and the application of quantitative research methods to analyse crime and police interventions. Compulsory modules including Modelling Policing, Crime and Society, and Sociological Research Design, also 20 credits each, equip students to apply rigorous methodological approaches, interpret data, and critically evaluate evidence-based policing strategies. The program also offers 40 credits of optional modules, allowing students to tailor their learning to specific interests such as cybercrime, policing contested social issues, or international policing. By integrating theory, empirical research, and applied practice, the program prepares graduates to engage with complex policing challenges, contribute to evidence-based policy, and work in government, research institutions, or professional environments where understanding and evaluating policing, crime, and societal impacts are essential.
