COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Migration Studies provides an in-depth exploration of contemporary migration issues, combining sociological theory with practical research skills to understand the dynamics of migration, forced displacement, and social integration. At the core of the program is the Postgraduate Taught Project and Academic Skills module, worth 60 credits, which equips students with essential skills in independent research, critical analysis, and academic writing. Core modules, including Migration: Theory, Concepts and Selected Issues, and Modelling Policing, Crime and Society, each contributing 20 credits, provide a theoretical and empirical understanding of migration processes, their social implications, and the ways in which migration intersects with crime, policing, and societal structures. Compulsory training in Introduction to Quantitative Analysis, also 20 credits, ensures students develop the methodological expertise to collect, analyse, and interpret numerical data relevant to migration research. The program also includes 40 credits of optional modules, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests, such as social policy, multiculturalism, or other sociological topics. Overall, the curriculum integrates theory, research, and practical application, preparing graduates to critically assess migration challenges, contribute to evidence-based policy, and engage with government, non-governmental, and international organisations in research, advocacy, and professional practice focused on migration, integration, and social cohesion.
