COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Comparative Politics and European Governance at Essex combines rigorous theoretical and practical training to help students understand the behaviour of political actors and the functioning of political institutions across countries and over time. The program begins with core modules that provide foundational knowledge, including an in-depth study of governance and policy in European economies, contemporary European politics, and research design. Students also acquire quantitative skills through two sequential modules in quantitative methods and data analysis, ensuring they are able to interpret, analyse, and apply empirical data to political phenomena. The core curriculum includes a substantial 60-credit module, allowing for either full-time or part-time study options, and dissertation preparation is embedded to support independent research. In addition to the compulsory components, students can select from a range of optional government-focused modules, enabling them to specialise in areas aligned with their interests, such as international relations, security studies, or comparative policy analysis. By integrating theory, empirical methods, and specialised study, the program equips students with the analytical, research, and practical skills necessary for careers in government, policy-making, research, international organisations, and consultancy, or for further academic study in political science and related disciplines. This structure ensures graduates are well-prepared to navigate and influence the complex political landscapes of Europe and beyond.
