COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Financial Technology (Economics) is structured to provide students with advanced knowledge of financial markets, data science, and computational methods, preparing them for careers in the fast-evolving fintech sector. Central to the program is the 40-credit dissertation, where students undertake independent research on a fintech-related topic, applying the theoretical and technical skills gained during their studies. Core modules include Computational Market Microstructure for FinTech and the Digital Economy, which examines the design of trading strategies, electronic markets, and operational risk management, and Big Data in Finance, which equips students with the skills to process and analyse large datasets for financial decision-making. The Economics of Financial Markets provides essential insights into the functioning of markets, risk, return, and asset pricing. Students also take a core-with-options module, choosing between CE705-7-AT or CE157-7-AU, which introduce computer science elements that strengthen computational and programming expertise. Flexibility is built into the program with 60 credits of optional modules drawn from a departmental list, enabling students to tailor their studies towards interests such as applied econometrics, financial engineering, or software development. This combination of compulsory and optional training ensures students graduate with strong analytical, technical, and research skills, ready for roles in fintech, banking, or further academic research.
