COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Environmental Futures with Climate Change at Essex provides an interdisciplinary framework for understanding and addressing the global climate crisis through the integration of scientific, social, and policy perspectives. Central to the program is a 60-credit core-with-options module that allows students to tailor their studies to specific interests, supported by modules in Comparative Environmental Politics and International Environmental Politics, which examine the political, economic, and social dimensions of environmental policymaking across different contexts. The Climate Change and Pollution module provides a thorough grounding in the scientific and environmental drivers of climate-related challenges. The program emphasizes rigorous research training through modules in Research Design and Introduction to Quantitative Methods and Data Analysis I and II, equipping students with the skills to handle complex datasets, apply appropriate statistical models, and conduct evidence-based analysis of environmental issues. Dissertation Preparation supports students in developing and executing an independent research project that integrates scientific knowledge with policy and practical applications. Optional modules allow further specialization in areas such as sustainability, environmental economics, and climate adaptation strategies. Graduates develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and effective communication skills, enabling them to contribute to government, NGOs, consultancies, and research institutions, while also providing a strong foundation for doctoral study and advanced research in environmental and climate policy.
