COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Actuarial Science at Essex offers a structured program designed to equip students with the mathematical, statistical, and financial expertise required for a career in actuarial practice. The course is composed of a combination of core, compulsory, and optional modules, allowing students to tailor their learning to their career goals. Students begin with a core-with-options module, providing 60 credits to establish a strong foundation in actuarial principles and methodologies. Compulsory modules include Bayesian and Computational Statistics, Contingencies I, Statistical Methods, Stochastic Processes, Financial Derivatives, Survival Analysis, and Mathematics of Portfolios, each providing 15 credits of focused study in essential areas of actuarial science. An additional compulsory-with-options module allows further specialisation through selected topics such as risk modelling or financial applications. Throughout the program, students develop practical skills in research, data analysis, and statistical modelling, supported by the Research Skills and Employability module, which prepares them for professional practice and enhances career readiness. This comprehensive curriculum ensures that students gain both theoretical understanding and practical competence, enabling them to approach complex problems in insurance, pensions, investments, and other financial sectors.
