COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Political Economy is a two-year program designed to provide advanced training in the study of political institutions and their influence on economic variables, with a strong emphasis on research skills and methods. In the first year, students build a robust foundation through core modules including Comparative Political Economy, International Political Economy, Research Design, Quantitative Methods, Advanced Quantitative Methods, Mathematical Methods, and Microeconomics. These modules equip students with both theoretical understanding and practical analytical skills to explore the complex interactions between politics and economics. In addition, students have opportunities to select optional modules from government studies and participate in summer school options, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific interests and career goals. The second year focuses on the development of independent research expertise, with the central component being a 90-credit MRes dissertation, which enables students to undertake an in-depth investigation into a topic of their choice under expert supervision. Additional modules in Macroeconomics, summer school options, and optional modules from government or economics allow students to further refine their skills and knowledge. By combining rigorous theoretical study with advanced research training, this program prepares graduates for careers in academia, policy analysis, international organisations, and other research-intensive roles, while also providing a strong foundation for doctoral-level study.
