COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes International Relations at Essex is a two-year program designed to provide comprehensive research training alongside in-depth study of international relations theory and practice. In the first year, students engage with core modules including International Relations: Theory and Analysis and Research Design, which introduce fundamental theoretical frameworks and research methodologies. They also choose from a range of elective and option modules, allowing them to explore specialised areas such as global security, conflict resolution, and international political economy. The first year also includes summer school options that provide intensive, practical learning experiences to deepen understanding of global political issues. Students develop critical skills in analysing international events, applying theoretical models, and designing empirical research projects. In the second year, the primary focus is the MRes dissertation, a 90-credit project that enables students to conduct independent, original research under academic supervision. Additional optional modules and summer school opportunities allow further specialisation and advanced study in areas of interest. The course equips students with expertise in international relations theory, empirical research methods, and analytical reasoning. Graduates leave with the skills to pursue PhD research or careers in research, policy analysis, government, international organisations, and other roles requiring advanced understanding of global politics and robust research capabilities.
