COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Health and Social Care Research program at the University of Essex provides an in-depth and applied framework for developing advanced research skills for health and social care practitioners. The course is structured around a core dissertation and a research placement, which together allow students to gain hands-on experience in designing and conducting research projects within real-world health and social care settings. Students develop a strong foundation in both quantitative and qualitative methods, including statistical analysis, survey research, data collection, and interpretation, alongside qualitative health research approaches. The program also introduces students to health informatics and applied epidemiology, equipping them with the skills to analyse health data and understand patterns of disease and service delivery. Additionally, students explore health economics, providing an understanding of the financial and resource considerations within health systems. Optional modules allow further specialisation to align with individual research interests and career goals. Through this combination of rigorous academic training and applied research experience, students develop critical thinking, methodological expertise, and the ability to synthesise evidence to inform practice and policy.
