COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Economics program at Essex is structured to provide students with a rigorous and comprehensive foundation in advanced economic theory, quantitative methods, and independent research. Core compulsory modules cover the essential pillars of the discipline, beginning with MRes Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics, each worth 20 credits, ensuring that students gain a solid grounding in the fundamental analytical frameworks and tools of economics. Alongside these, the Mathematical Methods module strengthens the quantitative and technical skills required for tackling complex economic problems and engaging with high-level research. Building on this foundation, students progress to Advanced Microeconomics and Advanced Macroeconomics, which deepen their understanding of economic behavior, market structures, and policy issues within more specialized and rigorous contexts. The program also offers a choice between EC965-7-SP or EC964-7-SP, allowing students to tailor their studies with an additional compulsory-with-options component worth 20 credits. Central to the course is the 40-credit dissertation, where students apply their acquired knowledge and research skills to investigate a chosen topic in depth, demonstrating their ability to conduct independent and original research. Together, these components create a demanding but stimulating program that equips students for PhD-level study or high-level careers requiring advanced economic expertise.
