COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Accounting at Essex Business School offers a carefully designed structure that develops advanced research skills while deepening subject knowledge in accounting. At the core of the program is a 60-credit Dissertation in Accounting, which provides students with the opportunity to conduct an independent research project, applying the methodologies and theoretical frameworks learned throughout the course. Alongside this, students take Research Evaluation and Research Methods in Accounting, each worth 20 credits, which build strong foundations in research design, data analysis, and the critical evaluation of existing studies. Compulsory training in Philosophies of Research and Advanced Qualitative Research Methods further equips students to understand the assumptions underlying different research traditions and to apply qualitative techniques at an advanced level. A compulsory-with-options module allows students to choose between BE150-7-AU or BE151-7-SP, tailoring their focus to specific areas within the discipline. In addition, students may select 40 credits of optional modules from Essex Business School’s Colchester campus, offering the flexibility to align their studies with personal interests or future research ambitions. Together, these components ensure that graduates are well prepared for doctoral study or academic careers, with a balance of theoretical understanding, methodological expertise, and practical research experience.
