COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Western Marxism and Translation program at Essex offers an integrated approach combining in-depth study of Western Marxist theory with advanced translation skills. Core modules provide students with a thorough understanding of key areas in Western Marxism, including capitalism and its critics and the Frankfurt School, allowing for a critical exploration of philosophical, social, and political debates central to the tradition. Alongside this theoretical grounding, students develop practical expertise in translation through compulsory modules such as Principles of Translation and Interpreting and Specialised Translation. These modules equip students with the skills necessary to translate complex texts accurately and effectively, focusing on both general translation techniques and subject-specific challenges. The program culminates in a substantial dissertation project that involves translating a previously untranslated Western Marxist text, accompanied by a scholarly commentary that demonstrates both mastery of content and applied translation ability. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to their own interests, further enhancing both subject knowledge and practical competencies. Additional training in professional skills for translators and interpreters ensures that graduates are not only academically prepared but also work-ready.
