COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA War, Conflict, and Society at Essex provides students with an in-depth understanding of the human, social, and cultural dimensions of war, focusing on the modern period and drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from history, literature, law, sociology, and psychoanalytic studies. The program goes beyond traditional military history to explore why societies engage in conflict, the diverse experiences of those affected, and the lasting impact of war on individuals and communities. Students study compulsory modules that develop skills in historical research, critical analysis, and evaluation of sources, while optional modules allow for the exploration of specific areas of interest related to war, conflict, and society. Key topics include the experiences of women in wartime, the psychological and physical consequences for veterans, and the ways in which wartime service is remembered, commemorated, or excluded in historical and cultural narratives. The course encourages critical engagement with different perspectives on violence, conflict, and memory, fostering an understanding of how power, identity, and social structures interact with warfare. Through the dissertation, students develop advanced research skills, producing a substantial piece of independent work.
