COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA English Language Teaching (TEFL/TESOL) at Essex provides comprehensive training for students aiming to teach English to speakers of other languages, combining theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research-led study. Central to the program is the 60-credit MA Dissertation, where students undertake independent research to apply concepts learned throughout the course. Core modules cover essential aspects of language teaching, including Teaching, Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking in TEFL/TESOL, Language Learning and Teaching, and Teaching Younger Learners, providing students with the skills to design and deliver effective lessons for diverse learners. The Description of Language for TEFL/ELT and Applied Linguistics module equips students with a solid understanding of language structure and use, which informs teaching practice. Research Methods and Educational Leadership and Management develop analytical, methodological, and professional skills necessary for effective classroom practice and educational leadership. Students also select from core-with-options and optional linguistics modules, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests such as applied linguistics, second language acquisition, or advanced language analysis.
