COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Social and Political Thought at Essex is designed to provide students with a rigorous and interdisciplinary understanding of contemporary social and political issues. The core of the program consists of compulsory modules, including a dissertation in Social and Political Thought, Contemporary Political Philosophy, Contemporary Critical Theory, and The Frankfurt School, which together equip students with strong analytical, research, and theoretical skills. These modules offer a deep engagement with key debates in modern political philosophy, critical theory, and the intellectual traditions that have shaped contemporary social thought. In addition to the core curriculum, students can select optional modules totaling 50 credits, allowing them to tailor their studies to their particular interests and career goals, whether in academia, policy, advocacy, or related fields. The program encourages students to critically examine pressing societal challenges such as inequality, structural injustice, environmental crises, and questions of democracy, rights, and governance, drawing on perspectives from both the humanities and social sciences. By combining theory, research, and practical engagement with social and political ideas, the MA develops the intellectual tools necessary to analyze complex global issues, formulate innovative solutions, and contribute meaningfully to public, professional, and academic debates. Graduates leave prepared to navigate and influence a rapidly changing world.
