COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Scriptwriting (Theatre and Digital Media) at Essex is structured to provide students with a comprehensive blend of practical and theoretical training, equipping them to excel as professional scriptwriters. Core modules include Dramatic Structure, where students develop a strong understanding of plot construction, character development, dialogue, and thematic exploration, and the Screenwriting Workshop, which allows hands-on practice in crafting scripts for stage, screen, radio, or television. These modules are complemented by optional courses, enabling students to tailor their learning to specific interests, such as poetic practice, novel-writing, or other creative writing pathways. Dissertation Preparation in Postgraduate Research and Writing Skills ensures that students gain the research and analytical abilities necessary to develop their final projects. The dissertation itself is a central component of the program, providing an opportunity for students to produce a full-length original script under one-to-one supervision from an experienced scriptwriting tutor. Throughout the course, students benefit from small seminar groups, encouraging close interaction, feedback, and collaborative learning.
