COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Philosophy program at Essex is structured to provide students with a comprehensive and flexible learning experience, combining core study with optional modules tailored to individual interests. The core component, worth 80 credits, allows students to engage deeply with central philosophical ideas, methodologies, and debates, ensuring a solid grounding in both Analytic and Continental traditions. In addition to this, students can select optional modules totaling up to 110 credits, enabling them to specialise in specific areas of philosophy or explore interdisciplinary connections. These options allow students to focus on subjects such as ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, political philosophy, aesthetics, critical theory, phenomenology, existentialism, and other advanced topics that align with their research interests. The program emphasises independent study and research skills, preparing students to undertake an in-depth dissertation that reflects their chosen area of focus. By balancing structured core learning with flexible optional modules, the MA Philosophy equips students with both a broad philosophical understanding and specialised expertise.
