COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Migration Studies provides an interdisciplinary framework for understanding the complexities of international migration, social policy, and welfare, combining sociological theory with practical research skills. At the core of the program is the Postgraduate Taught Project and Academic Skills module, worth 60 credits, which develops students’ abilities in independent research, critical analysis, and academic writing. Core modules such as Sociological Research Design and Migration: Theory, Concepts and Selected Issues, each contributing 20 credits, equip students with the methodological tools and theoretical frameworks necessary to examine migration processes, policy implications, and social integration challenges. Compulsory modules including Citizenship, International Migration and Human Rights, and Colonialism, Cultural Diversity and Human Rights, also 20 credits each, enable students to explore the intersections of migration, human rights, and social justice, addressing both historical and contemporary issues in multicultural and postcolonial contexts. The program also offers 40 credits of optional modules, allowing students to tailor their learning to specific interests, such as welfare policy, social cohesion, or transnational migration studies. By integrating theory, research, and applied learning, the course prepares graduates to critically analyse migration-related challenges, contribute to evidence-based policy, and engage with government, non-governmental, and supranational institutions in research, advocacy, and practice focused on human rights, social integration, and migration management.
