COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature program at Essex is structured to provide students with both a solid foundation in literary research and the flexibility to tailor their studies according to individual interests. Central to the course is the dissertation, which carries 80 credits and allows students to undertake an extended piece of independent research on a topic of their choosing, demonstrating their ability to conduct in-depth literary analysis and critical evaluation. To support this, the course includes a compulsory module in Dissertation Preparation, focusing on postgraduate research and writing skills, equipping students with the techniques necessary to plan, structure, and present a substantial research project effectively. In addition to these core components, students can select from a range of optional modules totaling up to 100 credits, allowing them to explore specialized areas of literature, theory, or cultural studies, and to pursue particular scholarly interests. This combination of structured support, independent research, and optional study ensures that students develop advanced analytical, critical, and writing skills, while also gaining the opportunity to engage with diverse literary traditions and genres. Graduates are prepared for a wide range of careers in research, publishing, cultural industries, education, and other fields where strong analytical and communication skills are valued.
