COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Literature and Creative Writing program at Essex is structured to provide a balance between independent research, practical creative work, and scholarly study of literature. At the heart of the course is the dissertation, a substantial 80-credit project that allows students to explore a topic of their choice in depth, combining research skills with critical and creative insight. To support this, the program includes a compulsory module on dissertation preparation, which develops postgraduate research and writing skills, guiding students in planning, structuring, and presenting their work effectively. Alongside these core components, students can choose from a wide range of optional literature and creative writing modules, allowing them to tailor their studies to their individual interests. Literature options enable the exploration of different genres, historical periods, and global perspectives, while creative writing options focus on developing practical skills in areas such as poetry, fiction, drama, and digital writing. This flexible structure encourages students to engage both analytically and creatively, fostering a deep understanding of literary study alongside the practical application of creative techniques.
