COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA International Relations at Essex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of global political dynamics, combining theoretical foundations with practical research skills. The program allows students to select from core pathways or options, offering 60 credits through either GV993-7-PS or GV985-7-PS, and equips them with the analytical tools to study the causes, consequences, and management of international events. Students develop a solid grounding in international relations theory and analysis, enabling them to critically assess global political systems, state behaviour, and transnational interactions. Research design is a compulsory component, preparing students to undertake rigorous, methodologically sound research for their dissertation. Additional core modules, with options such as GV517-7-SP, GV947-7-SP, or GV945-7-AU, allow for tailored learning that addresses specific interests in international politics, security, or global governance. A wide selection of optional government modules, providing 30 to 45 credits, further enables students to specialise in areas such as public policy, conflict resolution, diplomacy, and international security. Dissertation preparation supports students in developing independent research projects that integrate theoretical and practical knowledge. Overall, the course offers an interdisciplinary and flexible framework that fosters critical thinking, research competence, and a nuanced understanding of global affairs, preparing graduates for careers in diplomacy, international organisations, research, and policy-making roles.
