COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA European Politics at Essex provides a comprehensive and flexible program that allows students to develop an in-depth understanding of political systems, institutions, and policy-making processes across Europe. The course combines compulsory core modules with a wide range of optional modules, enabling students to tailor their studies to their individual interests and career goals. Core components include advanced modules such as Governance and Policy of European Economies and Contemporary European Politics: Continuity, Challenge, and Change, which offer critical insights into how European political systems operate, adapt, and respond to economic, social, and political pressures. Students also gain essential research skills through modules in Research Design and Dissertation Preparation, equipping them to undertake independent research projects and produce a high-quality dissertation on a topic of their choice. The optional modules allow for further specialisation in areas of government and politics, giving students the flexibility to focus on specific issues, regions, or comparative perspectives within European politics. Throughout the program, students develop analytical and critical thinking skills, deepen their understanding of European governance and policy, and acquire the methodological expertise needed to engage with complex political questions.
