COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Film Studies program provides a comprehensive framework for both academic and practical engagement with film. Central to the course is the dissertation, which allows students to undertake an in-depth research project, developing critical, analytical, and writing skills over an extended study period. Dissertation preparation is supported through a dedicated module on postgraduate research and writing skills, equipping students with the methodologies and tools necessary to conduct high-quality scholarly research. Alongside this, the Film Workshop module provides hands-on experience in filmmaking, enabling students to develop technical skills in areas such as cinematography, editing, sound, and production management, fostering creativity and practical expertise. The Critical Moments in the Theory and History of Film module explores key developments in film history and theory, giving students the ability to contextualize films within broader social, cultural, and political frameworks. To complement core learning, students can select optional modules from a diverse list of film-focused topics, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests such as documentary filmmaking, genre studies, or global cinema. By combining theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical filmmaking experience, the program prepares students for careers in film production, criticism, academia, or related creative industries, while fostering a deep understanding of film as both an art form and a medium of cultural expression.
