COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Environmental Futures with Climate Change at Essex provides an interdisciplinary framework for understanding and responding to the global climate crisis. Central to the program is the 60-credit core-with-options module, which allows students to tailor their studies according to specific interests, combined with a focus on Comparative Environmental Politics and International Environmental Politics, providing insights into the political, social, and economic dimensions of environmental policy across different countries and contexts. Core modules in Climate Change and Pollution explore the scientific, social, and environmental drivers of climate-related challenges, equipping students with the knowledge to analyze and address pressing issues in environmental management. The Research Design module develops essential skills in quantitative and qualitative research, enabling students to design and conduct studies, assess data, and critically evaluate evidence in environmental policy and practice. Students also engage in Dissertation Preparation, supporting them to undertake independent research projects that synthesize scientific understanding, policy analysis, and practical applications. Optional modules allow further customization of the program, providing opportunities to deepen expertise in areas such as sustainability, environmental economics, or climate adaptation strategies. Graduates leave with the skills to analyze complex environmental challenges, propose evidence-based solutions, and pursue careers in government, NGOs, consultancies, or research, while also being well-prepared for doctoral study.
