COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA English Language and Linguistics at Essex is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the English language, its structure, variation, and use. Central to the program is the 60-credit MA Dissertation, where students conduct independent research, applying theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to a topic in English language or linguistics. Core modules include Varieties of English, which examines regional, social, and global differences in the language, Syntax, which focuses on sentence structure and grammatical analysis, Semantics, which explores meaning in language, and Phonetics, providing an understanding of speech sounds and their production. In addition to these compulsory modules, students have the flexibility to choose optional linguistics modules, totaling up to 60 credits, allowing them to tailor the program to specific interests such as sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, or language acquisition. The combination of core and optional modules ensures a balance of theoretical, practical, and research skills. The program emphasises hands-on analysis through English corpora, recordings, and texts, equipping students with skills that are applicable to teaching, research, communication, and further academic study. Graduates leave with a deep understanding of English language and linguistics, alongside the ability to conduct independent research and apply linguistic insights in real-world contexts.
