COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Economics with Public Policy program at Essex is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of both economics and the processes underlying public policy. Core modules ensure that students develop essential knowledge in microeconomics, econometrics, and the foundations of public policy, equipping them with the analytical tools necessary to evaluate government decisions and their societal impacts. The course also includes specialised modules such as the politics of public policy and lectures in economic and public policy, which allow students to explore how political, social, and economic factors interact in shaping policy outcomes. In addition to the compulsory modules, students can choose optional modules to tailor their learning to specific interests, such as policy evaluation, financial markets, or other applied economic topics. The dissertation component provides an opportunity to undertake an independent research project, allowing students to apply theoretical and methodological skills to a real-world or conceptual policy question. Throughout the course, students develop critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills, learning to assess complex issues, interpret data, and present coherent arguments. Graduates leave the program well-prepared for careers in public policy, government, consultancy, finance, research, and international organisations, with a strong foundation in economics and its practical application to policy-making in contemporary society.
