COURSE CURRICULUM

The course structure in criminology is designed to give students a strong balance of academic, theoretical, and practical skills while allowing for specialisation through optional modules. The program begins with the Postgraduate Taught Project and Academic Skills, a core component worth 60 credits, which equips students with the tools necessary for independent research, critical thinking, and advanced academic writing. Alongside this, students engage with key debates in the field through Formative Debates in Criminology and explore pressing issues through Current Controversies in Criminology, each worth 20 credits. These modules provide a foundation in the evolving discussions and challenges shaping criminological thought and practice today. In addition, Sociological Research Design, also 20 credits, develops students’ understanding of research methodologies, encouraging them to critically examine the design, implementation, and interpretation of research in criminology and sociology. To complement these core studies, students select optional modules worth 60 credits from a range of topics, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific areas of interest such as crime prevention, global criminology, terrorism, victimology, or law enforcement. Together, these components create a program that is both rigorous and flexible, preparing students for advanced research or professional roles in criminology, sociology, and related fields.
