COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Childhood Studies program is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of childhood through both theoretical and applied learning. Students begin by engaging with critical debates in childhood and childhood studies, examining the historical, sociological, and psychosocial perspectives that shape our understanding of children’s lives. The program emphasises research with children and young people, equipping students with the practical skills and ethical considerations needed to conduct meaningful and sensitive research. Core modules explore children’s emotional worlds, offering insights into the inner experiences that influence development, relationships, and behaviour, while the study of geographies of childhood and youth investigates the spaces, places, and environments that shape children’s daily lives and social interactions. The program also addresses relational childhoods, examining how relationships within families, peer groups, and communities influence growth, identity, and wellbeing. Students have the opportunity to tailor their studies through optional modules that reflect their interests and career goals, ensuring a personalised and relevant learning experience. The dissertation forms a major component of the course, allowing students to undertake independent research and develop advanced skills in analysis, critical thinking, and academic writing. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, social care, therapeutic settings, charitable organisations, and international development, or for further academic study such as PhD research, combining theoretical knowledge with practical expertise to impact children’s lives positively.
