COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Audiovisual and Literary Translation at Essex combines practical and theoretical training to prepare students for advanced work in translation across literary and audiovisual contexts. The course is structured around a substantial dissertation, enabling students to conduct in-depth research and develop specialist expertise in their chosen area. Practical modules include Translation Portfolio I and II, which provide hands-on experience in translating texts accurately and creatively, and Audiovisual Translation, which explores the technical and stylistic challenges of translating media such as film, video, and digital content. Subtitling: Principles and Practice equips students with the skills needed to produce professional subtitles, addressing issues of timing, readability, and cultural adaptation. Students also develop professional competencies through the Professional Skills for Translators and Interpreters module, preparing them for careers in publishing, media, and cultural industries. To complement these core modules, students can select optional literature modules that explore topics such as African American literature, Caribbean and US literature, and global literary connections, enhancing their understanding of cultural and stylistic nuances in translation. This combination of practical training, research, and cultural study allows students to build technical expertise, critical insight, and professional readiness, equipping them to navigate the complex demands of literary and audiovisual translation in an increasingly globalized and multilingual world.
