COURSE CURRICULUM

The LLM in International Humanitarian Law at Essex provides an in-depth understanding of the legal frameworks governing armed conflict, human rights, and public international law, preparing students for careers in legal, policy, and advocacy roles related to conflict and crisis situations. The program combines core modules with optional choices to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Core components include the dissertation, which allows students to conduct independent, in-depth research, International Human Rights Law: Law and Practice, the International Law of Armed Conflict, Public International Law, and Current Challenges in the Law of Armed Conflict, which explore contemporary issues such as compliance, enforcement, and emerging technologies in warfare. Optional modules enable students to specialise further in humanitarian law or human rights law, tailoring their studies to specific career goals. Students also complete a Foundation Essay to build essential academic research and writing skills. This course emphasizes a balance between theory and practice, providing students with the ability to critically assess the adequacy of existing legal frameworks, understand the practical application of law in conflict situations, and navigate the complexities of international regulations and ethical considerations. Graduates leave equipped to engage effectively in international organisations, NGOs, governmental institutions, and legal advisory roles that address the protection of civilians, accountability for violations, and the enforcement of international law in contemporary crises.
