COURSE CURRICULUM

The LLM International Human Rights Law at Essex provides a comprehensive and rigorous exploration of the legal frameworks, theories, and institutions underpinning the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide. The program combines a strong practical focus with theoretical understanding, enabling students to examine the application of human rights law in a variety of contexts, including emergency situations, development, and transitional governance. Core modules include International Human Rights Law: Law and Practice, which equips students with practical skills and knowledge to navigate complex human rights challenges, and International Human Rights: Theories and Institutions, which provides an in-depth understanding of the conceptual and institutional foundations of human rights law. Students also study Public International Law, providing the broader legal context within which human rights norms operate, and complete a Foundation Essay to consolidate their understanding. The dissertation offers an opportunity for independent research, allowing students to investigate topics of personal or professional interest in depth. Optional human rights law modules allow further specialization and tailoring of the program to individual career goals. Graduates of this program are well-prepared for careers in advocacy, legal advising, research, or fieldwork with governments, international organisations, and non-governmental organisations, developing the knowledge, analytical skills, and practical expertise to become leaders in the field of international human rights law.
