COURSE CURRICULUM

The Law and Philosophy degree is structured to provide a balanced education across both disciplines, developing a strong foundation in core areas of law while engaging with major themes in philosophy. In the first year, students study Introduction to Philosophy alongside essential legal subjects including Contract Law, Public Law and Criminal Law, supported by Essex Law Key Skills and initial career development training. The second year advances legal knowledge with modules in Tort Law, Land Law, Justice and Legal Research Skills, while also allowing students to begin tailoring their studies through optional philosophy modules, enabling exploration of areas of particular interest. Career Development Skills Part 2 further supports employability. In the final year, the course brings together advanced legal and philosophical study. Compulsory modules include the Law of the European Union, Jurisprudence, Equity and Trusts, Contemporary Political Philosophy, and Philosophy and Mental Health, complemented by an optional law module that allows further specialisation. This structure ensures students gain rigorous legal training, a deep understanding of philosophical analysis and its application to legal and ethical issues, and well-rounded skills in critical thinking, argumentation and research. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in law, policy, philosophy or related fields.
