COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Statistics and Data Science course at Essex provides a rigorous foundation in both mathematics and statistics while equipping students with practical skills in data analysis and computational methods. In the first year, students study core mathematical topics such as calculus, matrices and complex numbers, discrete mathematics, and mathematical and computational modelling, alongside introductory finance, statistics, and programming using R for text analytics. These modules establish a strong analytical base while also incorporating employability skills to prepare students for professional environments. In the second year, the curriculum advances to more specialised mathematical and statistical topics, including linear algebra, real analysis, ordinary differential equations, survival analysis, and optimisation through linear programming, with additional options to explore areas of individual interest. Students continue to develop their professional skills and apply their knowledge to practical scenarios. In the final year, the focus shifts to applied and advanced statistical techniques, including linear regression analysis, Bayesian and computational statistics, stochastic processes, and data visualisation, alongside further specialised options to deepen expertise. Across all three years, the course integrates careers and employability training, ensuring students graduate with both strong theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in data analysis, finance, research, and a wide range of fields that rely on quantitative and computational skills.
