COURSE CURRICULUM

The three-year psychology program at Essex provides a structured and progressive learning experience, combining core modules, optional modules, and professional development opportunities. In the first year, students are introduced to fundamental aspects of human thought, emotion, and behaviour through modules such as understanding our place in the world, growing in the world, experiencing emotion, thinking and the mind, the social world, and the social brain. These modules build a broad foundation in psychological theory and practice while allowing students to select optional modules to explore individual interests. Personal development and employability skills are embedded from the start to support students in preparing for future careers. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge and research skills with modules in statistics for psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, brain and behaviour, personality and individual differences, psychology of health, and cognitive psychology. Optional modules continue to allow for specialization, while career planning and employability development remain integral. The final year focuses on independent research through a psychology project, enabling students to apply their learning to a significant piece of original research. Students can also choose from a wide range of optional modules or outside options to tailor their studies. Advanced employability skills and career progression are emphasized, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for diverse professional opportunities or further study in psychological science.
