COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Psychology with Economics at Essex integrates the study of human behaviour with economic decision-making, providing a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in psychology through modules such as understanding our place in the world, growing in the world, experiencing emotion, thinking and the mind, the social world, and the social brain, while also introducing core economic principles. This first year emphasizes personal development and employability skills, preparing students for independent learning and professional growth. The second year deepens understanding in both disciplines with modules covering statistics for psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, psychology of health, cognitive psychology, brain and behaviour, personality and individual differences, and intermediate microeconomics, along with career planning to enhance professional readiness. In the final year, students undertake a substantial psychology project and select optional modules to specialise according to their interests, while also engaging with applied economics through courses in behavioural economics and experimental methods in economics. This structure enables students to analyse human behaviour, understand economic decision-making, and explore how psychological insights inform policy and economic interventions. Throughout the program, the integration of research methods, data analysis, and applied learning ensures graduates develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, equipping them for careers in policy, research, business, or other professional fields where understanding human behaviour and economic processes is essential.
