COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Psychology program at Essex offers a comprehensive exploration of human thought, behaviour, and brain processes, combining theoretical knowledge with practical research skills. In the first year, students are introduced to core concepts such as understanding our place in the world, emotional experiences, cognitive processes, and social interactions, while developing foundational skills in personal development and employability. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning to individual interests. The second year deepens this understanding with a focus on statistics, brain and behaviour, health psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, personality and individual differences, and cognitive psychology, preparing students for advanced research and applied work. Opportunities for optional study enable further specialisation. In the third year, students undertake an independent psychology project, applying research methods to investigate complex psychological questions, and study the neuroscience of human nature, integrating knowledge of cognition and brain function. Additional optional modules allow further customisation, including opportunities to study across related areas or engage with applied psychology. Throughout the program, students build critical thinking, analytical, and methodological skills, while developing practical expertise through hands-on learning and research. By the end of the degree, graduates are equipped with a deep understanding of psychological science, research competence, and the professional skills necessary for careers in research, healthcare, education, and related fields.
