COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Psychology of Sport and Exercise at Essex combines the study of psychology with sport and exercise science, providing an immersive understanding of the human mind in relation to physical activity. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in psychology, covering topics such as understanding our place in the world, emotional experiences, thinking and the mind, social behaviour, and the social brain, alongside an introduction to sport and exercise psychology. Optional modules allow students to explore areas of personal interest, while employability skills are embedded from the start. In the second year, the course deepens knowledge with modules in developmental psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology, brain and behaviour, health and active lifestyle, and sport and performance psychology. Students also learn research methods specific to sport and exercise, building practical and analytical skills. The third year focuses on applying this knowledge through a substantial research project, alongside modules such as applied sports psychology and understanding how environments influence physical activity. Optional modules provide further flexibility to tailor learning to specific interests. Across the three years, students gain critical thinking, research skills, and practical experience, supported by access to dedicated facilities and laboratories. This program equips graduates for careers in sports psychology, coaching, health promotion, and related fields, combining scientific insight with applied expertise to enhance performance, health, and wellbeing.
