COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Physiotherapy program at Essex is structured over three years, combining academic study with extensive practical experience to prepare students for professional practice. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules in applied anatomy and pathophysiology, physiotherapy-led assessment, practice-based decision making, and understanding self and others, providing the essential knowledge and skills for effective patient care. The second year develops these skills further, focusing on physiotherapy-led interventions, promoting health and activity, and research methods, while offering two dedicated practice-based modules that allow students to apply their learning in real-world clinical settings. This hands-on experience is complemented by personal and professional development through modules on developing self and others. The third year emphasises leadership, preparation for professional practice, and independent research, alongside three advanced physiotherapy practice modules, enabling students to consolidate their clinical expertise and critical thinking. Throughout the course, students engage with patients across diverse healthcare settings, gaining experience in assessment, intervention, rehabilitation, and health promotion. The integrated approach ensures that graduates are highly competent, reflective, and autonomous practitioners, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and professional attributes required to deliver high-quality physiotherapy care, respond to complex patient needs, and contribute effectively to multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
