COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing programs at Essex are structured over three terms per year and adopt a developmental approach, balancing the mastery of nursing skills with the acquisition of knowledge and understanding. The programs are divided equally between theory and practice, with 50% of the course spent in clinical placements across a range of healthcare settings. This practical experience allows students to work alongside experienced nurses, gaining hands-on exposure to patient care while developing the ability to plan and deliver service user-centred care that addresses the holistic needs of patients. In addition to placements, students have opportunities to rehearse practical skills in controlled environments, ensuring they are well-prepared for professional practice. Placements are delivered in partnership with the NHS and independent health and social care sectors across Essex, and students are supported by allocated mentors and academic contacts linked to each placement. Shift patterns mirror professional nursing schedules, including early, late, night, weekend, and bank holiday shifts, providing a realistic and immersive learning experience. Attendance is compulsory for all aspects of the program, and successful completion is required for professional registration. The carefully designed modules equip students with specialist knowledge, transferable skills, and confidence, enabling them to make a meaningful impact in healthcare and to contribute positively to the lives of patients and communities.
