COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Marine Biology course at Essex provides a comprehensive understanding of marine ecosystems, combining theoretical knowledge with practical and field-based experience. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation in quantitative methods for life sciences, genetics and evolution, microbiology, animal evolution, ecology and behaviour, and marine ecology, alongside core marine biology field skills and transferable scientific skills. This mix of lecture-based and practical learning ensures students gain essential scientific techniques and experience in real-world marine environments. In the second year, the curriculum expands to include biodiversity from genes to ecosystems, professional skills for ecological and marine scientists, and the study of marine vertebrates, while students also have the option to select modules tailored to their interests. A key feature of this year is the estuarine and coastal ecology field module, which provides hands-on experience in field research. The final year focuses on independent research, enabling students to undertake a substantial research project that applies their knowledge to real scientific questions. Additional compulsory modules such as estuarine and coastal ecology and fisheries ecology develop applied skills in understanding and managing marine populations and ecosystems. Optional modules allow for further specialization, ensuring graduates leave with a well-rounded skill set and preparation for careers in marine science, conservation, and research.
