COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Human Biology program at Essex provides a thorough grounding in the biological sciences, combining molecular, cellular, and physiological approaches to understanding the human body. In the first year, students study core subjects including quantitative methods for life sciences, molecular cell biology, genetics and evolution, microbiology, biochemistry of macromolecules, general and organic chemistry, and anatomy and physiology, alongside transferable skills in life sciences. This foundation equips students with essential knowledge and practical skills needed to explore complex biological systems. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through compulsory modules in employability skills, molecular biology of genes, proteins and disease, and cell biology, while also selecting optional modules to tailor their studies to specific interests. The course emphasizes hands-on laboratory and research experience, developing skills in experimental design, data analysis, and critical evaluation of scientific literature. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project, allowing them to apply their knowledge to a topic of their choice and gain experience in scientific investigation and problem-solving. Additional optional modules provide opportunities to specialize further, integrating insights from related fields. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or further study, equipped to contribute to advances in understanding, preventing, and treating human disease.
